Our Staff

Pastor Stephen Newport

Pastor Newport grew up in a pastor’s home in Oklahoma. He was saved at the age of 12 and surrendered to preach at 14 years old. After graduating high school he attended Heartland Baptist Bible College in Oklahoma City, OK. It was there he met Theresa and they married shortly after graduation. In 2017, they felt called to move to Alabama and serve as the assistant pastor at Crossroads Baptist Church. For the next several years the Newports oversaw the youth, music, and bus ministry. During 2020, Stephen served as the interim pastor and eventually was asked to be a candidate for the open position of pastor. In June of 2020, Crossroads Baptist Church called Stephen to serve as Senior Pastor. Since then, Stephen, Theresa, and their family have ministered with the desire and intention of pointing to Jesus Christ those in the church, surrounding community, and city of Mobile.

Our beliefs

Loader image

We believe that there is only one God. He is living, omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent. In like manner to the other two persons of the deity, God never changes. He is high and holy enough to be our eternal judge and personable enough to be called our Heavenly Father. God exists in unity with the Son and Holy Spirit. All perform distinct offices that work together in offering us redemption. Genesis 17:1; Psalm 83:18; Jeremiah 10:10; Matthew 28:19; John 4:24; Acts 5:30-32; 1 Timothy 1:17; Revelation 4:11

We believe that the person of our Lord Jesus Christ came to earth, being born of a virgin, having human qualities, and all the while possessed His attributes as God the Son. Even though seen in a physical form, Christ’s divine attributes were present before, during, and after His time here on earth. He was sinless all the way through His death, thus allowing Him to fulfill His atoning work. Isaiah 9:6; Matthew 1:18-25; Matthew 26:38; John 1:1-4, 14; John 3:13; John 16:30; Hebrews 2:14-18

We believe that the Holy Spirit is a divine person that holds equality with God the Father and God the Son. He also possesses the same attributes as the other two divine beings. He has been active since the work of creation and continues to this very moment. The Holy Spirit convicts, fills, seals, guides, teaches, comforts, witnesses to, and sanctifies the believer. The modern charismatic movement, which requires a second filling or special revelation, is false and goes against the scriptural basis of the Holy Spirit’s work. The Holy Spirit’s involvement with “speaking in tongues” in the New Testament is no longer in use today because we possess the Word of God. Genesis 1:2; Mark 1:8; John 1:33; John 14:26; Acts 5:30-32; Acts 11:16; Ephesians 1:13-14; 1 Peter 1:2

We believe in the Genesis account of a six-day creation. This account is to be accepted literally with no time lapses or extra activity in its midst. God viewed man as His most precious creation and made Him in the image of the triune God. No evolutionary processes took place during this time and God established law and order for His creation. His work was flawless and viewed as “good” in His eyes. Genesis 1:1, 11, 24, 26-27; Exodus 20:11; Jeremiah 10:12; John 1:3; Acts 4:24; Romans 1:20; Colossians 1:16-17; Hebrews 11:3; Revelation 10:6

We believe that man was created in a state of innocence under the law and will of his Maker. However, by a voluntary choice of his own free will he broke the established command of God. By this willful act of disobedience, he was responsible for the separation from God. The Bible clearly states that as a result of one man’s choice, all of mankind thereafter would be sinners by willful choice and placed under just condemnation. Genesis 3:1-6, 24; Ezekiel 18:19-20; Romans 1:18, 20, 28, 32; 3:10-19; 5:12, 19; Galatians 3:22; Ephesians 2:1, 3

We believe that Jesus Christ was begotten by the Holy Spirit in a miraculous way that has never happened and will never happen again. His birth came through the virgin Mary in a way that has never happened to a woman since then. Mary was not herself supernatural, but was simply used of God to fulfill His purpose. Although born in human fashion and nature, Christ was still the Son of God and God the Son. Because His conception came by the Holy Spirit, he did not possess a human sin nature. Genesis 3:15; Psalm 2:7; Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:18-25; Mark 1:1; Luke 1:35; John 1:14; 1 Corinthians 15:47; Galatians 4:4; 1 John 5:20

We believe that salvation is made available to everyone through Christ’s atoning work on the cross and His victory over sin. The grace of God extends the free gift of salvation to all. This gift can be had by repentance of one’s sinful state, belief in the finished work of Christ, and accepting by faith that work of Christ. Certain individuals are not elected to receive eternal salvation. The only thing that hinders a person from receiving salvation is their own willful choice to reject the gospel. Genesis 12:3; Isaiah 55:1; Acts 2:38; Romans 3:21-26; 5:8; 6:23; 10:8-13; 1 Corinthians 15:10; Ephesians 2:4-9; 1 Timothy 1:15; 1 Timothy 4:10; 1 Peter 1:2; Revelation 22:17

We believe that the gospel offers one the great promise of justification. This includes the pardon of sin and the gift of eternal life. The work of salvation in one’s life does not come as a result of any good works or merits. Because our righteousness will not stand, He imputes his righteousness unto us. It is by this righteousness that we are sealed and kept forever. Once one has placed their faith in Christ’s atoning work, the eternal destination of that individual is forever secure. Our salvation will never become null and void because Christ’s atoning work never will. Isaiah 53:11; Habakkuk 2:4; Zechariah 13:1; John 10:27-30; Acts 13:39; Romans 1:17; Galatians 3:11; Titus 1:2; 3:5-7; Hebrews 10:38; 1 Peter 1:5, 1 John 5:13

We believe that there was a literal resurrection of Christ. He was dead for three days, rose, and later ascended up to Heaven. In the fact that there was a literal resurrection, we believe that there will also be a literal return of Christ. As recorded in the book of Revelation, the bride of Christ will first be raptured after which there will be a great tribulation here on earth. At the end of that time, Christ will come and reign for a thousand years here on earth and Satan will be bound in a pit. Afterwards, Satan will be loosed and will unite his forces for one last battle against the Lord. When Satan is defeated, all will receive judgment from God. Believers will come before the judgment seat of Christ and nonbelievers will appear before the great white throne of judgement. Those who are not found in the Lamb’s book of life will be forever condemned to the Lake of Fire with the devil and his angels. We as Christians will be judged according to our works and then will spend forever with God in Heaven. Psalm 72:8; Isaiah 11:4-5; Matthew 28:6-7; John 14:3; Acts 1:9, 11; 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17; 1 Timothy 2:5-6; Hebrews 2:17; 12:2; Revelation 1-22

We believe that God has commanded that no intimate sexual activity be engaged in outside of marriage between a man and a woman. We believe that any form of homosexuality, lesbianism, bisexuality, bestiality, incest, fornication, adultery, and pornography are sinful perversions of God’s gift of sex. Genesis 2:24; 19:5, 13; 26:8-9; Leviticus 18:1-30; Romans 1:26-29; 1 Corinthians 5:1; 6:9; 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8; Hebrews 13:4

We believe that the only legitimate marriage is the joining of one man and one woman, as determined by biological sexual gender at birth. Genesis 2:24; Romans 7:2; 1 Corinthians 7:10; Ephesians 5:22-23

We believe that men and women are spiritually equal in position before God, but that God has ordained distinct and separate spiritual functions for men and women in the home and church. The husband is to be the leader of the home and men are to be the leaders (pastors and deacons) of the church. Accordingly, only men are eligible for licensure and ordination by the church. Galatians 3:28; Colossians 3:18; 1 Timothy 2:8-15; 3:4-5, 12

The Local Body

We believe that a local New Testament church is a congregation of baptized believers associated by a covenant of faith and fellowship of the gospel, said church being understood to be the citadel and propagator of the Divine and Eternal Grace; observing the ordinance so Christ; governed by His laws; exercising the gifts, rights, and privileges invested in them by His Word; that its officers of ordination are pastors or deacons whose qualifications, claims, and duties are clearly defined in the scriptures; we believe the true mission of the church is found in the Great Commission: First, to make individual disciples; Second, to build up the church; Third, to teach and instruct as He has commanded. We do not believe in the reversal of this order; We hold that the local church has the absolute right of self-government, free from the interference of any hierarchy of individuals or organizations; and that the one and only superintendent is Christ through the Holy Spirit; that it is scriptural for true churches to cooperate with each other in contending for the faith and for the furtherance of the Gospel; that every church, in cooperation with Scripture, is the sole and only judge of the measure and method of its cooperation; on all matters of membership, of policy, of government, of discipline, of benevolence, the will of the local church is final. Matthew 28:19-20;  Acts 2:41-42; 6:5-6; 14:23; 15:22-23; 20:17-28; 1 Corinthians 5:11-13; 6:1-3; 11:2; 12:4, 8-11; 16:1-2; Ephesians 1:22-23; 4:11; 5:23-24; Colossians 1:18; 1 Timothy 3:1-13

The Ordinances

We believe that true baptism is by immersion, in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. This ordinance should be carried out under the authority of a local New Testament church. Baptism is done to serve as an identification of a believer with the work of Christ. It is not part of salvation, but merely serves as a testimony of it. This must be a prerequisite for church membership and partaking of the Lord’s Supper. The Lord’s Supper is the second ordinance recognized by Christians in which they have a time of self-examination, confession, and remembrance of the work of Christ.  Matthew 3:6; 3:16; 28:19-20; John 3:23; Acts 2:41-42; 8:26-38; Romans 6:3-5; 1 Corinthians 11:23-28; Colossians 2:12

The Offices

We believe that a pastor, while referenced with different titles in the Bible, is mandated by Scripture to lead, heed, and feed the flock of God. His job description includes being an overseer and shepherd. This calling of God is not for every individual and does hold certain qualifications.

The other office mentioned in Scripture is that of a deacon. This office is not required for a church, but can come out of necessity and under the direction of the pastor. Deacons are to serve and minister under the direction of the pastor. These men must also meet certain qualifications found in the Word of God.  Acts 6:1-7; 20:17, 28; 1 Corinthians 11:1; Ephesians 4:11-12; 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13; 1 Timothy 3:1-13; 1 Peter 5:1-3; Hebrews 13:17
